Matchup Summary

Laning vs Hwei is very hard, due to Hwei's abundance of abilities that allow him to deny Renekton from getting the trades he wants. All that Renekton can really do early is use Second Wind and Doran's Shield, as this allows him to sustain and survive the laning phase. Renekton's main objective should be to rush Mercury Treads, as it allows him to escape Hwei's CC faster, as well as lower his overall damage. Make sure to get your teammates to help gank Hwei, as his over extending playstyle will force him up into free kill. At post 6, Renekton can potentially kill Hwei, but this is pretty rare unless you're able to bush camp and wait for for him to use all his abilities. Renekton's main focus should just be to play around his team, playing around the necessary win conditions to help him find relevancy and win the game. Make sure when fighting that if Hwei R's you, that you try to dash or walk away from your team to avoid him dealing AoE damage.

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Play For Sustain Early - Hwei’s overall high damage playstyle from the form of his single target and AoE abilities can allow him to have a much easier time in poking Renekton down, forcing Renekton into a very uncomfortable laning phase. As Renekton the best thing he can do is simply go D Shield and Second Wind to help him survive Hwei’s early damage, following on within the lane Renekton should focus on rushing Mercury Treads to give him more play opportunities and defensive capabilities against Hwei.

  2. 02

Respect Hwei Poke - Greeding against Hwei’s damage can be an absolutely terrible idea, as going for any unnecessary trades or forcing minion kills can result in him completely chunking you out. As Renekton, we need to simply wait for the wave to come towards our side, on top of utilising our teammates' presence within the game to help bail us out of this horrible lane. Try to keep as much HP as you can, abusing empowered Q and our sustain items and playstyle to help carry us through.

  3. 03

Rush Mercury Treads - Rushing Mercury Treads is absolutely essential to Hwei, otherwise his high poke and cc playstyle will completely peg you into non-existence. Once you obtain these, the additional movement speed will help you easily bait out and avoid abilities, alongside the additional MR to help you negate his damage.

  4. 04

Bait Out Hwei Fear - Hwei’s fear is an absolutely terrible ability to play vs, as a good Hwei will always use this to peel Renekton away from him. The only event Renekton could maybe avoid his fear is that if Hwei already uses it onto one of your teammates, or you can quickly double dash past him to avoid it. Mainly baiting his fear is to allow for ganks, so make sure to do this if you’re in the process of potentially receiving one.

  5. 05

Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.

  6. 06

Play For Ganks - Renekton really cannot do anything within this match up, so you essentially just have to pray and spam ping for ganks if you want to achieve anything.

  7. 07

Avoid Hwei R - Hwei R is absolutely disgusting as an ability, so with that said ever getting hit by it can be absolutely catastrophic. When playing vs Hwei, try to avoid his R if you’re low by simply dashing in and out quickly if you’re confident in doing that, or if he throws it out obviously react by dashing or flashing to the side. When it comes to overall teamfights and you’re hit by Hwei R, try to walk or disengage away from your team with it on you otherwise it will nuke every target it hits.

  8. 08

Play For Teammates - This match up is pretty doomed to deal with, so playing for utility is essentially the main thing you should do when it comes to having success within the game. Look to fight skirmishes with the ability of helping your teammates obtain early objectives, try to also risk TP plays if you need to so you’re able to create winning situations for your team. You may fall behind in the process, but compared to laning vs Hwei you’re already going to be on the losing side, so make sure you can do what you can to win.

  9. 09

Build Hexdrinker, Eclipse or Stridebreaker - Go Hexdrinker to lower Hwei’s overall damage and have a MR shield / Build Eclipse, Stridebreaker or Profane - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Stridebreaker to cripple Hwei’s mobility and provide teammates with additional utility.

  10. 10

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - When it comes to the Hwei match up, Hwei’s overall multipurpose playstyle is always going to leave a problematic style for Renekton to play against. Hwei overall is the perfect champion to keep Renekton at bay, but with that said he is also a mage and we can play around it. Kaenic later on in the game is an absolute must vs Hwei, as this item will completely counter and lower Hwei’s potential damage, allowing for us to go more risky and tank more within fights. Within teamfights, Renekton should try to just do what he can to help his team, by playing around his carries and utilising his utility through W’s, E’s and items to help his teammates win the game. Play smartly, look for picks and try to avoid Hwei’s massive AoE in choke points.
