Kalista
Matchup Summary
Kalista is a pretty easy match up post level 6, as her early high mobility and lane bully based playstyle, allows her to completely dictate the early portions of the lane, making it hard for Renekton to really do much against. Renekton's way of winning is starting Doran's Shield and Second Wind, as this allows him to easily sustain and survive against her early poke, as well as rushing Plated Steelcaps to completely take away her damage. Once Renekton reaches level 6, he can completely run down Kalista with R and boots, providing her 0 room to do anything to outplay the situation. As a champion Kalista absolutely sucks, which gives Renekton all the freedom to actually do anything he wants to in the game.
Detailed Tips
- 01
Alcove Strat - Kalista’s level 1 is way too strong for Renekton to really punish, due to her high mobility and spear stacking damage. To avoid her zoning you off the wave completely, try to hide in alcove with E start, then look to wait until she shoves the wave into your tower. Doing this will help you regain HP and allow you to play safely into level 3.
- 02
Play For Sustain Early - Kalista’s early is too difficult for Renekton to really punish without reaching level 3 and rushing plated steel caps, in which we need to play to keep our HP up and look for the right trades and points to fight within the lane. Try to abuse D Shield and Second Wind to outsustain her damage in the lane, on top of using empowered Q trades to help keep HP up and whittle her HP down.
- 03
Respect Kalista's Damage - Kalista isn’t really a complex champion, being that her main attributes are trying to kite with her jump passive, as well as trying to stack her spears in her opponent until she has enough to insta kill her opponent. Kalista’s biggest weakness naturally is the fact that she can’t really sustain her E properly against bruiser champions like Renekton, as he’s able to deal his damage then get out with ease. With that said, don’t over commit and let her constantly throw spears into you, but play with speed and look for quality over quantity trades.
- 04
Rush Plated Steelcaps - Plated Steelcaps completely counter Kalista in the lane, as her heavy on hit playstyle loses out on a lot of damage in combination with her overall AD damage. Use these to also help you maintain mobility with Kalista, allowing you to have faster E trades, as well as you having the ability to easily kill her at level 6.
- 05
Quick Trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash. Heavy Trades - Being that Renekton carries a lot of high damage, Renekton is able to just jump on his target nearly at will. Whenever your laners present you with the ability to jump on them, simply take the opportunity to burst them as much as you can. If you didn't kill them already from that, use your options of freezing or your tower diving ability to help you finish off your opponent.
- 06
Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.
- 07
Play For Ganks - Kalista is pretty easy to kill when it comes to ganks, as she can’t properly utilise her R ability with her marked target, that most likely is an engage support or her jungler, which most potentially are very underwhelming champions being that its solo queue. Regardless, when your jungler comes to gank try to cut off Kalista’s way of escape utilising good movement and dashes to keep Kalista in an awkward position, followed by chaining your CC and damage together with your jungler.
- 08
Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Prior to this point in the match up, if Renekton has farmed safely and rushed defensive boots in the match up, Renekton is now ready to fight his opponent in an all in. Renekton's high base damage and stats from his R, allows Renekton to completely stat check his counter match up. Simply wait for the enemy to make a mistake, then go all out and kill your opponent.
- 09
Build Eclipse, Stridebreaker or Profane - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Stridebreaker to cripple Kalista’s mobility and provide teammates with additional utility. / Go Profane for full damage focused playstyles.

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Kalista isn’t really a great pick these days within league, making it a very suboptimal champion to play into the mid stages of the game. As much as the utility she has with her W and R, it still simply isn’t enough to entirely help her play the game as she really needs a great support champion alongside her. When playing Renekton, we typically hard counter her with a full damage playstyle, or anti mobility items such as stridebreaker or Randiun’s Omen, preventing her from hopping away and being able to play the game. Within teamfights, focusing Kalista is always preferred to stop any of her R CC or spear stacking attempts, making her a valuable target. Renekton doesn’t need to do much to kill her, so no matter what playstyle he opts into, he can always hard counter her and easily kill her off within the game.
