Alistar
Matchup Summary
Alistar is essentially a free match up, however his hard to kill playstyle does make it hard to reliably get kills onto him. Instead, try to play for giant farm leads, using your proxy style gameplay to help create tempo advantages, allowing you to have time to kill the enemy jungler, or get better resets towards item spikes. Eventually within the match up, simply avoid Alistar engages by playing from a safe distance, then look to kill his carries whenever you get the chance to.
Detailed Tips
- 01
Level 1 Q Start - Try to push for level 2 advantage while poking Alistar with your Q, on level 2 skill E/W use advantage to chunk out Alistar.
- 02
Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Alistar you're most likely able to kill him with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Alistar lose a lot more. HOWEVER, if Alistar has his abilities up and he isn’t entirely in W kill range, simply wait for the wave to bounce back to your side, while trying to freeze him out from the ability to get any CS and abuse his pick.
- 03
Avoid Alistar’s CC Combo - Alistar really doesn’t have a lot of tools to threaten Renekton, however he is a great neutraliser if played right. With that also said his only main tool to give him any survivability is the ability to use his CC to prevent Renekton from killing him. Aside from Alistar’s naturally hard to kill nature, his gank setup is also great for setting up team plays and utilising his CC with a damage jungler. Try to be very cautious of ganks, or even putting respect on Alistar’s utility when going for tower trade or all in plays. Wait for him to use his naturally long CDs, then abuse him after.
- 04
Abuse Renekton's Early Game - In this match up Renekton is essentially able to do whatever he simply wants. With that said, really hone into your strong early to mid game strengths to help you dominate and win the game. Play to deny your enemy of gold and xp, play to proxy and generally lead any top side skirmishes with your insane lane advantage.
- 05
Abuse Renekton's Waveclear - A giant advantage Renekton has within this match up, is his overall ability to easily clear minion waves. This can help him achieve perfect tempo resets, or allow him to proxy waves to help increase his gold lead, while also hostaging the enemy top laner under their own tower. Being able to fast clear also forces the enemy into contesting push, allowing you to easily mana burn and create advantageous positions from it. Abuse this strength to cheat out bad laning situations, or increase your overall power within the game.
- 06
Play Waves Accordingly - Simply assess whether or not you want to play for freeze, to help you deny XP and CS, while presenting yourself more opportunities to create fights. Or, play to shove waves to create proxy angles, tempo resets or create a dive opportunity. Renekton has all the cards to do whatever he wants with wave management. Also respect that if your laner tries to proxy, simply proxy back or coordinate a kill on them with your jungler.
- 07
Ping Alistar’s Roams - One of the only other things Alistar can really play for to gain an advantage is simply trying to roam the map and look for plays with his team. Alistar cannot really achieve anything top lane, so mainly he will play to look for engages for his team and try to secure objectives based on his presence. With that said, try to abuse Alistar’s roams by crashing waves for plates or minion waves. Try to really gain as big of a lead as you can with your top side advantage, try to also ping Alistar’s roams or try to counter with your own roams or TP plays if you really need to. More than not, I’d just farm it out and utilise my proxies opportunities to gain an even bigger tempo advantage.
- 08
Respect Alistar R - One thing to note about Alistar is that if you’re trying to commit a fight against him, trying to simply aim to burst him down is practically a waste of time. Most fights with Alistar are entirely pointless, as he is able to knock you away or neutralise you from even trading back against him. So most often, just avoid fighting him unless you want to mana burn him from doing anything else in lane, and instead just play to farm or go into the enemy jungle to take camps or kill the enemy jungle if they’re there.
- 09
Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

Midgame + Teamfighting Tips - Alistar’s main objective within the game is to play for engages, while also trying to peel off any damage threats from his team’s carries. As Renekton, your job is simply trying to creatively jump into his back line, with the objective of trying to one shot and overall disrupt his carries from playing teamfights. To achieve this, wait for Alistar to engage with his W onto your teammate, then aim to dash onto his backline and try to play for any kills you can. Focusing Alistar is a waste of time, so just simply ignore him and stick to your gameplan to eliminate any enemy win conditions.
