Matchup Summary

Amumu is one of the easiest match ups you can play against as Renekton, as Amumu's linear playstyle completely relies on landing his Q and setting up plays for his team. Within the laning phase, play off your abiltiies to burst him down and try to avoid any Q's he throws out. Renekton can pretty much kill Amumu at will if he forces the wave states on your side, so make sure to set up your all ins when the wave is frozen or slow pushing from your side of the map. Within mid game, try to avoid Amumu looking for Q > R engages, as this will provide he and his team an AoE stun to easily win a teamfight.

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Level 1 Q or E Start - As mentioned through other notes, playing off Q and E both require different plays, however in this match up you can essentially do either of them and have pretty good success. With that said, play around the strengths of level 1 and look for a level 2 kill.

  2. 02

Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Amumu you're most likely able to kill him with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Amumu lose a lot more.

  3. 03

Abuse Renekton's Early Game - In this match up Renekton is essentially able to do whatever he simply wants. With that said, really hone into your strong early to mid game strengths to help you dominate and win the game. Play to deny your enemy of gold and xp, play to proxy and generally lead any top side skirmishes with your insane lane advantage.

  4. 04

Play Waves Accordingly - Simply assess whether or not you want to play for freeze, to help you deny XP and CS, while presenting yourself more opportunities to create fights. Or, play to shove waves to create proxy angles, tempo resets or create a dive opportunity. Renekton has all the cards to do whatever he wants with wave management. Also respect that if your laner tries to proxy, simply proxy back or coordinate a kill on them with your jungler.

  5. 05

Respect Amumu's CC Setup - Amumu’s only real threat in the match up is the ability to provide great CC setup. Amumu’s 2Q’s and potential R is simply enough to completely lock out Renekton out of an entire fight. Try to avoid his Q’s with your movement, if the enemy has easy to land CC from other members then you can try and rush Mercury Treads to help you combat the CC.

  6. 06

Respect Amumu’s Extended Damage - Amumu’s extended fights are low key pretty strong, this usually comes from the fact that taking damage lowers his E CD on top of his W damage, which works based on his targets maximum HP. Simply abuse quick trades unless you’re ahead of him, in that case Renekton will be able to 1000 > 0 him relatively easy.

  7. 07

Quick Trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash.

  8. 08

Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

  9. 09

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Amumu’s role within the mid game is mostly to focus on landing a giant Q R play in a major teamfight. Amumu’s role is pretty limited outside of landing this, with that said your objective is trying to cut Amumu’s position from being able to land it. If you’re in a teamfight try to body block Amumu or his Q’s from reaching your team, alternatively jumping into his back line will also force him to use his R early too, or potentially lose his team’s ability to follow up on his R play. Whatever you can do to avoid him landing a mass R will ultimately win you the fight, try to also build the right resistances and tank items such as Sterak’s Gage or another resistance item to allow you to easily tank his teams incoming damage.
