Anivia
Matchup Summary
Anivia is a tricky style match up for Renekton, as her ability to harass Renekton pre 6 is very hard to deal with. As Renekton, try to use Doran's Shield and Second Wind to help sustain through her auto attacks and abilities, while also playing with the intent of avoiding her Q at all times. When you're level 6 and have Hexdrinker or Mercury Treads, Renekton can win all in's if you manage to avoid her Q with your dashes, allowing you to burst her down and allow any teammates to easily jump on her. Within the mid game, Renekton excels a lot more as a teamfighter than Anivia, however try to avoid fog of war as Anivia will sit in bushes looking to burst you or your teammates. Eventually look for Baron in the game, as it weakens Anivia's power to waveclear.
Detailed Tips
- 01
Play For Sustain Early - Anivia’s overall strengths within the game come from her strong laning phase. Early in the game Anivia will try to hard poke you with Q and E, in which you need to avoid her Q as much as possible. Her E will do no damage if she doesn’t land her Q or R damage onto you, meaning you can easily tank that with ease. On top of that she will try to auto attack a lot so utilising D Shield and Second Wind will help you sustain through her consistent assault, presenting you the ability to outstain and survive the laning phase.
- 02
Avoid Anivia’s Q - Aside from Anivia having very high base damage, she will only be able to out trade if she lands her Q, which boosts her overall E damage by a substantial amount. Try your best to avoid Anivia Q in the following ways. Try to weave in and out with short clicks to bait her Q, use E towards her then sidestep to the side or E2 behind her to avoid her Q hit. All of these can allow you to get more successful trades, or allow you to kill her.
- 03
Rush Mercury Treads - Anivia’s main source of survivability towards Renekton is using her Q to peel Renekton off of herself, on top of also using her wall to block Renekton from running her down. Typically Anivia can successful peel and space away from Renekton when doing this right, however if Renekton rushes Mercury Treads he is able to break out of her Q a lot faster, overall ruining Anivia’s ability to perfectly space away in time, giving Renekton the chance to E2 in and easily run her down with the additional movement speed and MR.
- 04
Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.
- 05
Play For Ganks - Anivia’s naturally fast pushing and over extending playstyle will most often present the ability to gank. Depending on the lane, if you’re top lane top lane you can most often just kill Anivia with ease with jungle presence, however if it’s mid this will be more challenging. When receiving a gank, try to double dash into Anivia and use your W to lock her down to help your jungler gank. Burning her flash or passive is a giant advantage to winning the lane, so try to utilise the waves on your side and ping your jungler to gank.
- 06
Quick Trades - If you can avoid Anivia’s Q, you can try to punish her with the following trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash.
- 07
Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Prior to this point in the match up, if Renekton has farmed safely and rushed defensive boots in the match up, Renekton is now ready to fight his opponent in an all in. Renekton's high base damage and stats from his R, allows Renekton to completely stat check his counter match up. Simply wait for the enemy to make a mistake, then go all out and kill your opponent.
- 08
Build Hexdrinker, Eclipse, Stridebreaker or BoTRK - Go Hexdrinker to lower Aniva’s overall damage and have a MR shield / Build Eclipse, Stridebreaker or BoTRK Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Stridebreaker to cripple Anivia’s mobility and provide teammates with additional utility. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.
- 09
Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Anivia through the later stages of the game essentially suffers from her old champion design, as most champions can easily surpass her wall or allow themselves to easily avoid Anivia’s Q or R. Anivia’s main win condition through the game is trying to look for easy targets that walk into her in fog of war, or forcing fights in choke points within the jungle. Try to avoid fighting Anivia in tight spaces, playing in the open provides an easy opportunity to avoid her damage and negate her overall advantages. Try to also ward around fog of war objectives with yellow or blue trinkets, these will help you spot out Anivia and help you avoid her easy access to kills. Within teamfights you can burst Anivia pretty easily, on top of the fact you can easily W her to cancel her R damage and cast, preventing Anivia’s DPS in a fight. Play the fights accordingly and try to one shot the main carries if Anivia isn’t as big of a threat. Whenever you win fights, try to force a baron when its available, this will help you push against Aniva’s naturally strong waveclear.
