Matchup Summary

Aurora is a very difficult match up, as her high burst damage hard nullifies Renekton's ability to go aggressive, forcing him to play defensive with Second Wind and Doran's Shield. As Renekon, try to let her push and look to use your short clicks to bait our her abilities, allowing you to waste her mana and set up E trades with her abilities going on cooldown. Once Renekton gets Mercury Treads or Hexdrinker, Renekton is able to force more aggressive trades, allowing him to make use of his level 6 powerspike to kill Aurora. Getting ganks is also pretty necessary to ensure solo kills, so make sure to play off your jungler to help find the kills needed early. Eventually within the mid game, try to avoid Aurora's massive R damage flanks, by pinging out her locations or trying to force her to R before she can use it on your team.

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Play For Sustain Early - Aurora’s damage is absolutely horrible in most stages of the game, I mean I honestly don’t understand why Riot is completely fine with this to be honest. Either way, try your best to avoid Aurora’s Q and passive procs damage, try to play to keep your HP up and play for level 6 before any success in the match up.

  2. 02

Respect Aurora’s Damage - Like I already mentioned, her damage is ABSOLUTELY NUTS at most points in the game. Aurora’s Passive, Q and E are all really disgustingly strong, so it’s in your best interest to avoid these as much as possible. Try to utilise short clicks to feint in and out of her range, this can help you bait out her abilities and avoid the damage, allowing you to force trades or help you mana burn Aurora within the early stages of the lane.

  3. 03

Rush Mercury Treads Or Hexdrinker - Both of these are pretty essentially to help you out manoeuvre her damage by the ability of having more movement speed, on top of the additional MR and shield utility they provide to help you play against Aurora. You can essentially buy both of these in the match up as the value is too huge to not take against her, if you’re able to tank her damage she practically becomes pretty useless at those relative stages in the game. Later on in the game you can finish Maw of Malmortius or buy Kaenic for additional hard MR to help you tank through her damage.

  4. 04

Quick Trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash.

  5. 05

Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.

  6. 06

Play For Ganks - Playing one vs one into Aurora is completely miserable until level 6 and MR items, with that said spam pinging ganks before or after is pretty much needed to help you gain an advantage into her. Renekton typically setups ganks super well into most champions, same can be said into this match up. Simply dash into Aurora and try to stun her when your teammate ganks. Chaining your CC will help you shut down Aurora, this is necessary to gain the advantage you need to help you stabilise or snowball against her.

  7. 07

Abuse Aurora W And R Positioning - Typically the way you can abuse Aurora is simply looking to combo after she misses her abilities. Once you engage with your E Aurora will either use her E to go backwards, or she will use her W and try to run away. When she uses W try to follow her onto her side of the map. This can help cut off her path of escape if she is trying to kite elsewhere, or it can allow you to land on top of her to do a heavy trade once she comes out of W. Just note that you should only do this if you already have MR, just in case her abilities come back up and she punishes you after you disengage. When it comes to her R, try to also cut off her position near her side of the map, otherwise she can use it to escape any danger with her dash. Taking out her escape routes is ultimately going to help you secure kills and allow you to use your powerspikes effectively.

  8. 08

Respect Aurora’s R Damage - Aurora’s R damage is as BS crazy as her other abilities, with that in mind try to respect her roams and damage potential at all times. Try to ping your team to be careful any time Aurora is near, try to also respect her R catch potential whenever pushing side lane as it can be used as a giant AoE slow, potentially preventing you from being able to escape in time.

  9. 09

Ping Aurora’s Roams - While Renekton can play well enough to neutralise Aurora she can however play directly into her teammates, this presents her the ability to easily snowball from skirmishes, lane ganks and overall objective based plays. Whenever Aurora tries to roam, try to spam ping her locations on the map at all times, otherwise she will easily pick up kills and start to steam roll the game as soon as she gets a lead. A fed Aurora is an absolute nightmare, do everything in your power to make sure you abuse her roams with your wave clear to help you pick up plates or obtain gold and xp. Aside from Aurora making giant blunders in the lane, there is really no consistent way other than farming well and trying to play safe to really leverage an advantage into her.

  10. 10

Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Prior to this point in the match up, if Renekton has farmed safely and rushed defensive boots in the match up, Renekton is now ready to fight his opponent in an all in. Renekton's high base damage and stats from his R, allows Renekton to completely stat check his counter match up. Simply wait for the enemy to make a mistake, then go all out and kill your opponent.

  11. 11

Build Maw of Malmortius, Eclipse or Stridebreaker - Build Maw if the enemy has multiple AP champions and you want a MR shield. Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Stridebreaker to cripple Aurora’s mobility and provide teammates with additional utility.

  12. 12

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Within the mid game, Aurora’s overall power really depends on how good you play within the early stage of the game, as well as your ability to alert your team of her movements on the map. If Aurora fails to make any major plays happen through the early game, then she will be considerably weaker in being able to play through skirmishes and teamfights. Overall Aurora is always a giant factor within the game as her R provides lots of utility and damage, as well as her high base damage. To truly counter Aurora, simply try to ward out objectives or fog of war entrances to lanes, as these will prevent her the ability to easily pick off her targets. Within teamfights the first thing Aurora will try to do is R when your team is clumped up, following up with her remaining ability burst damage to one shot your carries. Try to focus Aurora straight away within the fights, being able to lock her out and one shot her is crucial to winning a fight vs her and her team. Alternatively, if you’re able to kill her before a major team fight or objective, this will result in a better situation, as teamfights and objectives based play will be a lot easier with to play around.
