Matchup Summary

Galio is quite easy to deal with in the match up, as Renekton's high damage and tank killing ability allows him to easily break through Galio's stats, using abilities such as Empowered W or Empowered E. Renekton can always reliably punish Galio for engaging, taking away Galio's natural strengths into squisher melee based lanes. Renekton's only main concern in this match up is Galio's ability to easily use R to change the game, forcing Renekton to spam ping his team from over committing on plays Galio is roaming towards. If you can successfully avoid Galio's R by baiting it out with your team, or using your pings to make your team disengage, Renekton can punish Galio's failed attempts by crashing minion waves and taking platings. Within teamfights, try to avoid fighting Galio and instead using your lead to focus his carries within the game.

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Level 1 Q or E Start - As mentioned through other notes, playing off Q and E both require different plays, however in this match up you can essentially do either of them and have pretty good success. With that said, play around the strengths of level 1 and look for a level 2 kill.

  2. 02

Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Galio you're most likely able to kill him with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Galio lose a lot more.

  3. 03

Abuse Renekton's Early Game - In this match up Renekton is essentially able to do whatever he simply wants. With that said, really hone into your strong early to mid game strengths to help you dominate and win the game. Play to deny your enemy of gold and xp, play to proxy and generally lead any top side skirmishes with your insane lane advantage.

  4. 04

Respect Galio's CC Combo - Galio's only main tool in lane is trying to catch you with W into his E > Q > AA combo. This combo can give Galio a lot of strength in being able to out trade and set up gank/dive attempts on his opponent, with that said try your best to avoid this. If you can successfully avoid using your movement or dashes, you can try to follow up with a combo back against him to severely punish him from missing. Doing this leaves Galio in a really terrible spot, so make sure to abuse him if he is overextended in the lane after missing.

  5. 05

Play For Manaburn - As Galio is more of a tankier champion, Renekton’s overall goal to set up his kills and advantages is playing to mana burn him. Galio’s only item to help him sustain his mana is through RoA, however before this Renekton can use his high tempo playstyle to completely burn through Galio’s mana. He can achieve this by crashing waves with his wave clear, utilising fast combos to punish or bait out Galio’s abilities and abusing sustain based playstyles such as D Shield and Second Wind, to help tank Galio's efforts in trying to fight back. Overall if Renekton can play with this gameplan, Galio won’t be able to roam or utilise any advantages against Renekton.

  6. 06

Play Waves Accordingly - Simply assess whether or not you want to play for freeze, to help you deny XP and CS, while presenting yourself more opportunities to create fights. Or, play to shove waves to create proxy angles, tempo resets or create a dive opportunity. Renekton has all the cards to do whatever he wants with wave management. Also respect that if your laner tries to proxy, simply proxy back or coordinate a kill on them with your jungler.

  7. 07

Quick Trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash.

  8. 08

Respect Galio’s R - Galio’s R is a giant tool that can help him reach fights in a matter of time, allowing him to shift the tides of a fight for his team. Galio’s overall threat is within his R, so trying to negate that by hard pushing on his side of the map. If you do this, Galio has to decide whether or not to lose xp and gold, or take the chance of coinflipping with his ultimate. Alternatively, try to avoid Galio’s R altogether by taking isolated picks onto his team, or trying to shut him down when he is isolated with your team.

  9. 09

Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

  10. 10

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - When it comes to the mid and late game, Galio will try to play off his engages with his E or R to help him initiate picks or teamfights. Try to avoid these by warding fog of war territories with your yellow or blue trinkets, this overall will limit his play making potential and counter his ability to engage. When it comes to direct teamfights, if Galio tries to R, try to jump out of the radius to avoid being knocked up and focused. Within this stage of the game you should try to build more tanky or high resistance items to help you survive through his CC combos, alongside the ability to help you block his combos for your team. If you can act as a wall in front of him, Galio won’t be able to play the utility he needs for his team. You can also play to dive his back line and draw attention away from Galio’s engage, helping your team easily play front to back while being a giant distraction within the teamfights.
