Gwen
Matchup Summary
Gwen is a hard style match up for Renekton the later the game gets, as her overall windows to punish are a lot shorter than most other match ups. Renekton must make sure to avoid getting hit by her stacked Q, as it provides her a lot of damage to win the fights. Renekton should look for fights on his side of the map, as he's able to reliably get in range as well as avoiding consistent damage back. Renekton's quick trades matter a lot into Gwen, as Gwen's strength comes from her extended trades, allowing her to have the upper hand. When Gwen uses R, try to always disengage away from her at all costs, as her damage and slow are too much to deal with. Once Renekton has Eclipse, Renekton is able to have more lethal trades against her, allowing him to stat check Gwen reliably with Eclipse and R. Later in the game, Renekton should buy Kaenic to survive her scaling damage, otherwise she will completely melt him. Make sure to also peel your teammates from Gwen's R, using your W's to help stop her from running your team down.
Detailed Tips
- 01
Respect Gwen’s Level 1 - Gwen as a champion can leverage a pretty great level 1 vs a lot of her opponents, mainly due to the reason she can abuse her high attack speed steroid from her E in combination with her Conqueror. As of a result, she can force a lot of early kills if she plays it correctly with her spacing. With that said if she does take E and she is trying to zone you off level 1, you can try to skill W to help you peel her off yourself, however losing the opportunity to touch the wave level 1 can be a big deal, on top of the fact W doesn’t really help vs Gwen’s boneplating in these early stages of the lane. Alternatively, I personally prefer Q start as it can help me easily poke it and allow me to poke my Q into the range of minions, if I’m able to touch the wave without going into auto range vs E start Gwen. If Gwen takes Q start the lane will overall be a lot easier to navigate, allowing you the opportunity to push hard against her to reach level 2 before her, resulting in a potential level 2 trade with E/W. Obviously respect her Q stacks, the higher they are the more damage she will deal, so space optimally and abuse your level 1 advantage with Q if you’re able to.
- 02
Respect Gwen’s Passive - One of the most underrated aspects of the Gwen matchup comes from how strong her passive actually is. Firstly, Gwen is able to deal the target's maximum health damage based on her overall AP , resulting in her auto attacks, Q and R, to deal an insane amount of damage within duels. On top of this, Gwen can also heal for 50% of post mitigation damage dealt against champions, resulting in powerful sustain based fighting that allows her to win a lot of duels. These hidden variables present her in a strong time within extended fights, so try to to avoid taking these as much as possible and try to abuse Renekton’s strong trading patterns to over power Gwen.

Respect And Avoid Gwen’s Q - When laning vs Gwen, if she has priority on the wave, she will build her passive Q stacks, then look to E Q at the same time, dealing tons of damage and heavily chunking you out. In this case, you can try to do short clicks to walk in and out, to help you bait her E Q early, assisting you to avoid her damage while making her over extend towards you. After she misses you should look to trade immediately, as you will have the upper hand within your damage. As also mentioned, you can use your dash to dash away, or you can use it towards her. Renekton E if timed well, can dash through her beginning frames of E Q, to majority of her entire damage from E Q, allowing you to heavily punish her, followed by a kill if you have R or if she’s low enough for lethal. Play wisely with how you do this, as she can ghost and run you down if you’re both even HP and if you’re over extended within the lane.

Respect Gwen W - Gwen’s W is a super annoying ability, even considering the fact that a melee champion like Renekton can still get cucked out of finishing kills against her with this ability. The way Gwen W works, is that if you’re not within her W’s inner radius of the ability, she can block all damage sources in the entire game outside of tower shots. Meaning if you ignite too early and she is within her W, she can completely avoid taking damage, wasting your ignite and your overall kill pressure within the process. Another factor of Gwen W, is her ability to gain 22 armour and magic resist, scaling off her overall AP. These stats also provide her an edge to make her pretty tanky in up front trades, causing difficulty in trying to out trade her. When fighting Gwen, typically she will start using E in the beginning to nullify Renekton’s potential damage within the trades. If Gwen does this, you can look to knock her boneplating off then disengage altogether, as Gwen’s next E will be 24 seconds, resulting in a window to get a better fight to overall help you chunk or kill her within that window.
- 05
Abuse Healing Reduction - An underrated strength that you can utilise within the Gwen match up is abusing anti heal, as this cuts down a large portion of her overall sustain that helps her naturally over power her opponents. Buying an executioners, or using ignite can be a giant difference in being able to snowball over Gwen consistently, as it allows you to overpower her with your naturally high stats and damage, in combination with taking away her extended trading prowess.
- 06
Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.
- 07
Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.
- 08
Respect And Avoid Gwen R - Gwen’s R is an absolutely ridiculous fighting tool, making it a very feared ability that you need to escape ASAP if she uses it. Renekton’s overall flaws are presented when he 1v1’s Gwen in R, as her damage counters his naturally high HP as well as her ability to exploit Renekton if he doesn’t have any high magic resist items. Make sure when fighting Gwen that you never try to all in her when you’re over extended, otherwise she can completely run you down with R. Make sure to utilise short trades unless she makes a blatant mistake to kill her. At most, try to always disengage if she uses R, try not to greed your flash too as this can be a giant mistake with how strong her slows stack in combination with ghost.
- 09
Build Hexdrinker, Eclipse, Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Hexdrinker to lower Gwen’s overall damage and have a MR shield / Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Within the mid to late game, Gwen’s overall strength definitely super exceeds Renekton’s in the ability to fight in a 1v1 setting. With that said, your objective around Gwen should be to clear side lanes from her relentless pushing playstyle, or abusing your hard advantage early if you’re ahead of Gwen by hard shoving waves, on top of looking for skirmishes and teamfights with your team. No matter what stage of the game, your objective should be to try and use your teamfighting strengths to over power Gwen’s pick. With that said, compared to a lot of split pushers, Gwen is most certainly one of the better teamfighters with her W and R potential, so make sure to avoid directly fighting in her line of damage from her R, while also trying to utilise your empowered E and stuns to help you peel her away from your team. If possible, if you’re able to fight without her present around objectives, this will help you open up to closing the game a lot easier and overall taking her away her damage and utility from joining fights.
