Matchup Summary

Jarvan is a pretty free match up to deal with as Renekton, as Jarvan's simplistic and easy to outplay kit provides Renekton the ability to kill Jarvan at will. Level 1, try to avoid Jarvan's passive autos with grasp and his W, as these provide him early damage to help him assert dominance. By level 2, Renekton can simply take W and look for heavy trades as soon as Jarvan walks into range. Post level 3, Renekton can force trades on Jarvan to heavily burst him down, or he can side step Jarvan's engages, countering him back with a heavy trade and potential kill window from that. Jarvan's only real purpose within the game is to look for picks with his team, so make sure to ping his whereabouts to avoid giving his team any potential assistance. In teamfights we can simply nuke Jarvan before he's able to do much, but preferably focusing his main carries is more important for the game.

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Level 1 Q or E Start - As mentioned through other notes, playing off Q and E both require different plays, however in this match up you can essentially do either of them and have pretty good success. With that said, play around the strengths of level 1 and look for a level 2 kill.

  2. 02

Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Jarvan you're most likely able to kill him with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Jarvan lose a lot more.

  3. 03

Abuse Renekton's Early Game - In this match up Renekton is essentially able to do whatever he simply wants. With that said, really hone into your strong early to mid game strengths to help you dominate and win the game. Play to deny your enemy of gold and xp, play to proxy and generally lead any top side skirmishes with your insane lane advantage.

  4. 04

Respect Jarvan’s Passive + Q Shred - Jarvan’s early laning phase consists of him abusing grasps and passive procs for damage, or using his Q to poke out and trade with auto attacks. Make sure when fighting Jarvan that you always avoid trading into his Q damage and armour shred passive, on top of also denying him any auto attack trades without your W. If you play to keep your HP up and play around your abilities, Jarvan will not be able to do a single thing.

  5. 05

Abuse Renekton W Shield Break - Renekton’s W shield break is a really great tool into Jarvan, as you’re able to consistently break his shields and counter his overall shield heavy playstyles with some of his bruiser builds. As long as you’re using empowered W on his shield timing, Jarvan will never be able to out trade Renekton in a 1v1.

  6. 06

Respect Jarvan’s Gank Setup - Jarvan’s overall gank setup is pretty great with the right jungler, as he applies a lot of utility against targets with his overall armour shred, knock up, W slow and his R lockdown. Try to hold your dashes against Jarvan, wait for him to E > Q and side step it, if he tries to ult use your E1 or E2 to dash out of it to avoid getting caught.

  7. 07

3 Points Q > W Max - W Max vs Jarvan is a giant counter option towards his overall playstyle, as if he opts towards his bruiser shield build with his W, Eclipse and Fimbulwinter, Renekton will be able to consistently nuke through all his shields with the consistent amount of W’s he is able to obtain within a fight.

  8. 08

Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

  9. 09

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Jarvan’s overall objective when it comes towards the mid to late game, is essentially to make play making opportunities using his E Q and R combos, or adding in flash to help him easily combo towards out of access targets. Jarvan’s reliability as a pick through the game severely weakens when more champions access HP, Armour Shred or Mobility, so as you’re getting into the game, utilising playstyles such as W max continuously creates problems in him trying to stick towards targets. When playing vs Jarvan, try to avoid fights where the enemy has the player advantage, as he thrives off the ability to make picks and plays in greater numbers. When teamfighting vs Jarvan, you’re most likely able to easily cut down his resistances using Empowered E and W’s, to weaken his accessibility to front line within front to back fights. Playing to jump and distract his backline is another great option vs Jarvan, as his commitments are setting up engages with his teammates following them. If you’re able to build correctly you will be able to easily stick onto his carries and potentially nuke or slow them down, as within that time your team can successfully kill Jarvan and look to advance against his team within the fight.
