Kayn
Matchup Summary
Kayn is a really free match up for Renekton, as Renekton's raw damage can completely overpower each time Kayn tries to fight. Kayn's objective into Renekton is to try and farm early passive stacks for his Rhaast, which while is his gameplan is also suicide. Renekton can brute force kills on Kayn at will if he tries to walk up towards him, only with Kayn's level 1 being a minior threat towards Renekton. Once Renekton snowballs hard enough, he's able to buy Eclipse and Executioners, allowing him to easily kill Kayn's Rhaast form, as well as continuing his top side snowball. After winning lane, Renekton can look to use his lead around his teammates, providing him the ability to play for objectives and win teamfights.
Detailed Tips
- 01
Respect Kayn Level 1 - Kayn is an absolute psycho of a champion, whose entire goal and identity is trying to force fights off CD until he gains his form. Top lane Kayn, can either play to proxy level 1, or he can play to instantly fight you with Q start and Conqueror. To stop Kayn from proxying level 1, walk with your minion wave level 1 to prevent him from doing this, as if Kayn does show up, you can take W start and try to force a kill onto him. When the lane normally starts, Renekton can’t really fight Kayn level 1 due to his lower CD on Q, as well as his overall wave clear and damage to reach level 2 before Renekton. As Renekton, try to sit back and take short AA Q trades if he engages. If Kayn is playing safe, try to abuse hitting level 2 first to help you force a level 2 fight.
- 02
Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Kayn you're most likely able to kill him with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Kayn lose a lot more.
- 03
Abuse Renekton's Early Game - In this match up Renekton is essentially able to do whatever he simply wants. With that said, really hone into your strong early to mid game strengths to help you dominate and win the game. Play to deny your enemy of gold and xp, play to proxy and generally lead any top side skirmishes with your insane lane advantage.
- 04
Take Advantage of Kayn’s Power INT - Kayn will 100% try to prema fight you off CD to get stacks, so make sure to fully hone into heavy trades and look to kill him on repeat if he tries this. Once you’re able to sustain a lead, you can try to zone him off his minion wave behind his turret, allowing you to proxy or force kills on him if he doesn’t use W within the wall.
- 05
Cancel Kayn’s W - Kayn’s W earlier on before his form can be cancelled, leaving him in terrible situations when he’s trying to escape through the walls. As Renekton, whenever he’s trying to fight us for stacks, Kayn will try to run away and heal within the wall to prevent him being at death’s door. However if we hold our W, we can use this to completely cancel his W to stop him from escaping, leaving us the ability to easily stat check and kill him in the rest of a fight.
- 06
Heavy Trades - Being that Renekton carries a lot of high damage, Renekton is able to just jump on his target nearly at will. Whenever your laners present you with the ability to jump on them, simply take the opportunity to burst them as much as you can. If you didn't kill them already from that, use your options of freezing or your tower diving ability to help you finish off your opponent.
- 07
Play Waves Accordingly - Simply assess whether or not you want to play for freeze, to help you deny XP and CS, while presenting yourself more opportunities to create fights. Or, play to shove waves to create proxy angles, tempo resets or create a dive opportunity. Renekton has all the cards to do whatever he wants with wave management. Also respect that if your laner tries to proxy, simply proxy back or coordinate a kill on them with your jungler.
- 08
Respect Rhaast Powerspike - After Kayn completely sprints it down, he will be able to obtain his Rhaast form, allowing him to sustain much more effectively through combat, as well as having more damage and obtaining a knock up to help him win fights. Renekton at this point should already be strong enough to fight him, however if you’re not utilising Ignite then make sure to take Executioner’s to completely gut his healing through a fight. Do note that once Kayn R’s with his Rhaast form, he can also heal up towards his full HP bar, making it SUPER necessary to have healing reduction.
- 09
Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.
- 10
3 Points Q > W Max - This playstyle allows you to constantly have W’s to help you stay onto Kayn while abusing your high damage ratios, allowing you to easily snowball and permanently shutdown Kayn within all stages of the game. Make sure to put 3 points into your early wave clear and poke, then look to max W throughout the rest of your points. Once completed, max your E for additional mobility to help enable your up close stun abusing playstyle.
- 11
Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.
- 12
Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Once Kayn reaches the later stages of the game, Kayn will want to play for chaotic skirmishes around his team, using his Rhaast form to initiate with his knock up, as well as abuse his high sustain playstyle. Kayn does a lot of damage at these stages based around his Q’s target maximum HP damage, as well as having very low CDR to spam in the process. As Renekton, your overall goal is trying to utilise healing reduction against Kayn, while playing off our W max playstyle to constantly stun and lock Kayn into place. The less CC we have, the harder it will be to shut down Kayn, so make sure to opt into maxing your W to make the game a lot easier. Overall, try to avoid fights without your full team members, try to pick off or kill easy targets within the fight before trying to fully commit against Kayn. If we’re playing to frontline and protect our team, try to stun lock him down and use empowered E to shred any potential armour he also has against your team.
