Kennen
Matchup Summary
Kennen is a pretty difficult match up, as his range and mobility provide him the ability to keep Renekton at range. Despite it being somewhat difficult, Renekton can use Second Wind and Doran's Shield to help him out sustain Kennen's damage, as well as providing Renekton more trading opportunities. Something Renekton can do, is that he can use his E to double dash onto Kennen, allowing him to time his W onto Kennen's W animation, providing Renekton the ability to deal damage and look for his main source of damage. Renekton's first major buys can be either Mercury Treads to avoid being stunned as long, or he can buy straight into damage, allowing him to easily deal with Kennen. Once Renekton has Mercs and is successfully playing around his passive, Kennen cannot really do much if Renekton jumps onto him. Kennen's main role within the game is simply looking to flash R, so make sure to watch every flank point and make sure to stun Kennen before he jumps into range of your team.
Detailed Tips
- 01
Level 1 E Start - Try to cheese PTA proc or Conq with E1 > 3 auto's > disengage with E2.
- 02
Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Kennen you're most likely able to kill him with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Kennen lose a lot more.
- 03
Play For Sustain Early - Kennen’s early power can definitely deter Renekton from many aggressive trades, due to playing around Kennen’s stun as well as respecting Kennen’s overall burst damage if he lands his abilities. To make the lane a lot easier, make sure to build D Shield and take Second Wind to help you sustain through his damage. Going both of these allows you to provide more trading patterns within the laning phase.
- 04
Respect Kennen Stun Passive - The way Kennen’s stun works, is that he can apply 3 stacks of his passive towards a target, allowing him to stun them 1.25 seconds as well as gaining back 25 energy. This is a core element to play around Kennen, as if Renekton typically dashes into Kennen. Kennen can use his Q E W, or passive stun auto, Q, W to help him disengage and stun Renekton before he’s able to trade any damage back. As Renekton, we need to play around his passive stacks, as once he uses his stun auto we can look to trade against Kennen if we’re quick enough with our timing. Alternatively, we can also try to bait his abilities using our short click movement, to walk in and out to bait Q’s to prevent him from having an additional stack for his passive if we dash onto him.
- 05
Punish Kennen W - Kennen’s W allows him to speed away from his targets, on top of allowing him to do deal damage and apply a passive stack. His W is usually his core ability that prevents Renekton from getting satisfactory trades. However, if we’re able to dodge Kennen Q and avoid his passive stun auto, we can look to double dash onto Kennen from the minion wave, allowing us to land on top of him while in his W animation, presenting the opportunity to W AA Q him, giving us a decent amount of damage, while allowing us to setup future kill trades onto him. Being able to stun Kennen within his W, also allows us to cut his overall timing of escape, preventing him from being able to kite us, while presenting the ability to kill him in post 6 fights.
- 06
Use Minions Effectively - This point essentially means we can use minions to weave in between to avoid Kennen’s Q’s, or use them to make him auto attack a low HP minion with his passive. If we’re able to use the minions to our advantage, we can also create trading or all in opportunities to help us kill Kennen within the lane.
- 07
Rush Mercury Treads - Mercury Treads rush allows us to make the lane a whole lot easier, as we’re able to easily break out of Kennen’s stun, lower his overall AP damage and provide us with the mobility to stick onto Kennen within fights. When we also trade CC in fights, Renekton’s able to escape Kennen’s stuns a lot faster making him pretty uncontestable within fights.
- 08
Quick Trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash.
- 09
Respect Kennen R CC Combo - Kennen’s R is absolutely massive for a game changing play, as it’s pretty OP within skirmishes or teamfights. Kennen R allows him to apply AoE damage and stuns across a fight, also synergising with his passive to potentially reach double stuns off on a single target. When playing around it in lane, try to use your mercury treads to counter his incoming stuns. You can also bait Kennen R by using E1 to engage, then use E2 to instantly disengage if either of you are lower HP in the lane. Within later stages of the game, try to ward or spot flank attempts with Kennen’s TP to stop him from utilising a max value R.
- 10
Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.
- 11
Go Hexdrinker, Eclipse, Stridebreaker or Profane - Go Hexdrinker to lower Kennen’s overall damage and have a MR shield. / Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Stridebreaker to cripple Kennen’s mobility and provide teammates with additional utility. / Go Profane for full damage focused playstyles.
- 12
Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Kennen’s whole mid to late game objective, is playing for TP or opposite side flank engages. Kennen’s whole identity is trying to amass a CS lead within the side lane, trying to build towards rocket belt, shadowflame and deathcap, with the intention of looking for a TP or roam play, allowing him to flank from behind and land a giant AoE R, to nuke his opposing targets. Kennen’s overall playability resides in being able to get into the centre of fights, meaning if you can stop him with your stun before he enters the fight, this will cut his chances of being able to be relevant within the fights. When it comes to direct teamfights, try to always watch where Kennen’s position is, then once Kennen tries to engage, try to block his path by using your W and R to block his ability to directly get into range. If you’re able to protect your teammates from his flank, you will essentially win the fight from your utility and damage potential. After Kennen has no R, try to play around either protecting your carries from any other remaining damage, or look to flash or dash onto his backline with the intention of killing his carries.
