Ornn
Matchup Summary
Detailed Tips
- 01
Level 1 Q Start - Try to push for level 2 advantage while poking Ornn with your Q, on level 2 skill E/W use advantage to chunk out Ornn and set up a potential level 2 or 3 kill.
- 02
Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Killing Ornn usually requires chunking him out within the first two waves, allowing you to use the 3rd and 4th wave bounce to push the wave on your side of the map to look for a kill angle. Ornn in these situations cannot really do much, so as long as you’re patient and play for this scenario, you will most likely be able to leverage a solo kill or a free gank opportunity.
- 03
Abuse Renekton's Waveclear - A giant advantage Renekton has within this match up, is his overall ability to easily clear minion waves. This can help him achieve perfect tempo resets, or allow him to proxy waves to help increase his gold lead, while also hostaging the enemy top laner under their own tower. Being able to fast clear also forces the enemy into contesting push, allowing you to easily mana burn and create advantageous positions from it. Abuse this strength to cheat out bad laning situations, or increase your overall power within the game.
- 04
Respect Ornn Brittle Passive - Ornn’s brittle allows him to apply a debuff onto his target, allowing his next auto attack to do 10% to 18% of the target’s maximum HP in magic damage. Ornn’s brittle targets that are CC’d, take 30% seconds longer to escape any CC. When playing into Ornn, we must always avoid taking his Brittle stack passive, coming from his W or his R. Try to always Ornn’s auto attack or abilities when you have a brittle stack, as he can also proc his brittle from his CC. Once successfully avoiding Ornn’s brittle passive, Ornn will not be able to have the damage or survivability to potentially help him beat Renekton.
- 05
Avoid Ornn W - Ornn’s W is another important ability we must avoid, as his W can deal 12 to 16% of his target’s maximum HP as magic damage, allowing him to absolutely shred the HP of any HP stacking champion. An easy way we can avoid Ornn’s W, is if Ornn is walking towards us in melee range, we can use our E to E into him or to the side of his cast, removing his ability to utilise his total damage of his W or avoiding all the damage completely. We can also use our E to force trades then side step to the side, allowing us to walk behind him as he uses W. Abusing these two ways to avoid his W is very crucial for having the upper hand in 1v1’s against him.
- 06
Avoid Ornn Knockups - Ornn has an abundance of knock ups ranging across his kit. His Q is a slight displacement that can allow him to slightly nudge you towards him or away from him. His E allows him to knock up targets as long as they’re next to any terrain, this also includes terrain such as his Q or any other champion made terrain. Ornn’s R also knocks up if you get hit by the 2nd part of his R. Overall, avoiding standing next to walls, towers or his Q is absolutely essential as his ability to use his entire kit when you’re stunned is practically a death sentence. If you’re trying to kill Ornn under a tower wait for him to use E by waking in and out towards him, allowing you to bait his E and force the tower dive.
- 07
Abuse Empowered Q/E - Renekton’s Empowered Q and E are both very important tools when fighting Ornn, as they enable Renekton to overpower and deal with Ornn within most stages of the game. Renekton’s Q allows Renekton to outsustain Ornn within the lane, using it to poke away and easily wave clear against him in the process, creating reset opportunities or the ability to help fix wave states. Renekton’s empowered E allows him to shred through Ornn’s total armour, helping him or his teammates apply more damage to help kill him faster.
- 08
Play Waves Accordingly - Simply assess whether or not you want to play for freeze, to help you deny XP and CS, while presenting yourself more opportunities to create fights. Or, play to shove waves to create proxy angles, tempo resets or create a dive opportunity. Renekton has all the cards to do whatever he wants with wave management. Also respect that if your laner tries to proxy, simply proxy back or coordinate a kill on them with your jungler.
- 09
Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.

Respect And Outplay Ornn’s R - Ornn’s R is terrific ability that allows him to mass knock up and apply brittle onto all his targets. Ornn’s R playmaking ability is absolutely insane, allowing him to easily win and turn fights with the press of a button. However, Ornn’s R can be interrupted within his R2 cast, denying him from knocking back his Ram towards his targets. If you or your team are able to cancel his R, this will weaken his overall ability to create playmaking opportunities to carry the fights. Renekton within 1v1’s or teamfights can stun Ornn before he’s able to use R2. Just make sure that you time your W half a second before it reaches Ornn’s character model, otherwise he will still be able to use it. Try to avoid his R at all costs with your own dash, flash or using your W stun.

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Ornn’s role within the mid to late game, is utilising his heavy frontline cc playstyle to help protect teammates and initiate fights. Ornn’s scaling is always pretty relevant due to his maximum HP damage, his abundance of CC and his ability to upgrade his teammates items, furthermore increasing his HP, armour and magic resist by 30% when upgrading his whole team's items. Ornn compared to most tanks is one of the more deadlier ones, due to his huge variety of mechanics and aspects within his kit, hence making him a difficult match up later on. As Renekton, it’s very important to always try and keep Ornn within the side lane, as his playstyle to shove and roam with a high value R is always a threatening scenario. Simply try to hard crash waves, then look to try and rotate before Ornn’s able to. Alternatively, you can try to force fights if Ornn is isolated, allowing you to 1v1 him with items such as Black Cleaver and Shojin. If you’re able to remove Ornn’s R at any point within a fight, this is a gigantic moment to abuse as it takes away a lot of Ornn’s power. When it comes to teamfights, typically you want to take them if Ornn has no R or isn’t present within the fights, as this typically allows Renekton to do whatever he wants. If Ornn is within the fight, try to cancel his R at all costs. Make sure to dash onto him with your stun, then time your W to cancel his R2 cast, allowing you to prevent your team being mass CC’d by his team. Cancelling his R is absolutely crucial to avoid disastrous teamfights, as well as preventing his brittle being abused by his teammates CC. If you’re able to deny Ornn from using R, then you can change your overall motives towards shutting down any of his carries, or if your team is focusing on him then you can use your Black Cleaver and Empowered E shred to help cut down his overall armour. Overall, as long as Ornn doesn’t have R or cannot cast his R2, his overall pick will lose a ton of value.
