Poppy
Matchup Summary
Detailed Tips
- 01
Level 1 Q Start - When laning vs Poppy, Q start is most preferred as it allows you to push for level 2 against her, while allowing you to whittle down her HP in the process. Renekton should try to avoid Poppy’s Q level 1, with the intention of tagging Poppy and the minion wave with Q. Once you reach level 2, Renekton can skill E to let him force a heavy trade, allowing him to set up a level 2 or 3 kill.
- 02
Respect Poppy's Passive - Poppy’s passive allows her to chunk out her opponents HP with her magic damage and grasp auto attack, while providing a shield on the ground in the process. Once obtaining the shield through minion kills with her passive or picking it up from the ground, Poppy can tank up to 11% to 20% of her maximum HP as a shield. As Renekton, we can utilise our empowered W to completely break the shield, which usually is possible if she decides to walk up into our range with her shield. If Poppy uses her passive attack to apply damage onto us, we can actively move towards the shield to help deny her from getting her shield, losing her ability to safely trade against us.
- 03
Avoid Poppy Q's Damage - Poppy’s Q damage allows her to do 2 part damage, totalling up to 200% bonus AD and 18% of the target's maximum HP as damage. Poppy’s Q is a serious ability to avoid at all times, which is certainly possible if we utilise short clicks to click in and out between her. Doing this will allow you to bait out her Q, thinking you’re walking into her range, but instead you will click back out forcing Poppy to miss her Q and waste her mana in the process. This is a core technique to abuse vs Poppy, as you can abuse it going towards the minion wave or simply walking into her. The more you do this, Poppy will lose out on mana, on top of the fact she won’t have the damage to be able to fight Renektin.
- 04
Avoid Poppy E Stun - Poppy’s E stun can also be very annoying, as it sets up her entire kit to lock her targets down, as well having the ability to deny any of Renekton’s dashes in the process. When playing against Poppy, you never want to position near any mountain terrain or structures, as this will provide her the free ability to get her stun off. As long as you play in the middle and actively play on the opposite side of Poppy to the wall, Poppy will never be able to get a stun off, making it very frustrating and impossible for her to do anything.
- 05
Hold Renekton E For Poppy W - This is arguably the reason why people think Poppy is a hard counter match up, however just like all her other abilities, this is simply just another mind game ability that requires you to hold your E before her W. Poppy will simply always W if Renekton telegraphs his dash towards her, making dash trades very risky. Instead, we can actually do either of the following to make things a lot easier. Renekton dashes require more creativity, which we can simply do by looking away from Poppy, then surprising Poppy with an E1 when she walks towards his range, which most often forces Poppy to W after the dash, allowing us to hold E2 until it goes on CD. Another thing we can do is simply walk towards Poppy, with the intention of using our other match up fundamental tips to help us bait her W. Poppy will typically W if she thinks she is under threat, so make sure that when you avoid her Q and E usages, you utilise your Conqueror autos, Q and W, to help you stat check and force her to W.
- 06
Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.
- 07
Respect Poppy R - Poppy’s R can be a great tool to lock her targets down harder with the additional CC, or it can be used to knock her enemies completely away from fights. When playing vs Poppy, poppy will typically use her R aggressively if Renekton is low and within a killable range. However, if Poppy is low and Renekton is pushing for a kill, Poppy will charge her R to knock away Renekton from killing her. As Renekton, we can try to reposition away from her R using our flash to avoid being knocked out of range, or we can trust our movement to avoid Poppy R if we’re at a safe distance to do so. Overall try to respect her R and prevent her using it properly within these situations. Another thing to note, is that Renekton W can break Poppy’s R wind up animation to put it back on CD.
- 08
Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.
- 09
3 Points Q > W Max - This can depend on how well you do in the lane, but if you’re snowballing vs Poppy then make sure to max W after 3 points Q to help you dominate and provide more damage against her in 1v1’s. W max is pretty good here as you’re able to consistently apply damage onto Poppy without relying on using your E, which if Poppy is being stubborn can backfire on you if you’re relying on your W’s long CD.

Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Poppy’s objective within the mid game is to play around her team, using her disruption and engage heavy kit to help her succeed within these stages of the game. As Renekton, our role is to use our side pressure to our advantage, meaning if we get the chance to 1v1 Poppy, we certainly can do that. Mainly, you want to make sure you’re crashing waves with the intent of roaming towards your team to make picks, preoccupying Poppy in the process to take away her skirmishing power. If Poppy can’t be there to defend her carries in these crucial moments, Poppy will not really be able to do anything else useful. Within teamfights, Poppy will mainly start the fight first with her E, usually using most of her abilities in the process. Typically we want to avoid taking fights in terrain based areas, in which fighting in the wide open will prevent Poppy from having success with her kit. Poppy’s priority is mainly trying to dogpile on your team's win conditions, so make sure to abuse this by focusing her backline to take away her overall damage potential with her team. If Poppy doesn’t protect her team in these moments, she will simply grief and have no one to help follow her.
