Matchup Summary

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Level 1 Q or E Start - As mentioned through other notes, playing off Q and E both require different plays, however in this match up you can essentially do either of them and have pretty good success. With that said, play around the strengths of level 1 and look for a level 2 kill.

  2. 02

Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Pyke you're most likely able to kill him with Your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Pyke lose a lot more.

  3. 03

Avoid Pyke’s Q - Pyke’s Q allows Pyke to either stab his target to deal damage and slow them, or he can hold Q to charge up his pull, allowing him to pull his targets and slow them in the process. Pyke Q is somewhat decent vs Renekton due to his obese size hitbox, however with good movement we can avoid his Q by walking side to side from him, or we can utilise minions to hide behind his Q. Pyke’s Q will only essentially hit Renekton if Renekton tries to telegraph his E stun towards Pyke, so make sure to be creative with your engages and try to punish Pyke if he uses his Q CD.

  4. 04

Avoid Pyke’s E Stun - Pyke’s E can be very annoying as it allows him to instantly dash away, while stunning his target in the process. As Renekton, when we try to force trades using our E, Pyke can instantly E away to stun us in the process, allowing him to use Q right after and do some decent damage on his trade. Try to hold your dash until Pyke makes a blatant mistake, or he tries to walk up to CS while you have W up. Pyke is often easy to one shot, but you need to allow him to walk in your range to actively find the kill window.

  5. 05

Abuse Renekton's Early Game - In this match up Renekton is essentially able to do whatever he simply wants. With that said, really hone into your strong early to mid game strengths to help you dominate and win the game. Play to deny your enemy of gold and xp, play to proxy and generally lead any top side skirmishes with your insane lane advantage.

  6. 06

Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.

  7. 07

Heavy Trades - Being that Renekton carries a lot of high damage, Renekton is able to just jump on his target nearly at will. Whenever your laners present you with the ability to jump on them, simply take the opportunity to burst them as much as you can. If you didn't kill them already from that, use your options of freezing or your tower diving ability to help you finish off your opponent.

  8. 08

Ping Pyke Roams - Pyke’s only strength against Renekton, is to utilise his W stealth and movement speed to help him roam the map and look for kills with his team. Doing this Pyke will forfeit the lane, losing gold and xp in the process. Renekton’s best tool is to abuse his wave clear, so make sure when Pyke roams you hard spam ping that he is missing, while actively trying to crash the wave to take plates and incoming minions. Pyke really can’t do anything within this lane, so make sure to really punish Pyke for every roam he makes.

  9. 09

Build Eclipse, Stridebreaker or Profane - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Stridebreaker to cripple Pyke’s mobility and provide teammates with additional utility. / Go Profane for full damage focused playstyles.

  10. 10

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Pyke’s overall objective is looking to force chaotic skirmishes using his Q, on top of using his R to chain execute enemies within fights. Pyke’s overall damage within teamfights isn’t as impactful, as he’s typically waiting on the outside to finish off targets. With that said, try to use pings and prevent your teammates getting caught solo by the enemy team, as this will perfectly play into Pyke’s gameplan. If Pyke isn’t able to make any picks on isolated teammates, Pyke’s overall role falls out of relevancy as he’s unable to use his kit towards his advantage. Another thing you can do to counter Pyke, is using red trinkets or control wards to spot him out, as spotting out Pyke prevents him from catching his targets off guard. Within teamfights, simply play by bursting his main damage carries, as his objective is looking to secure executes. If Pyke is unable to have teammates to apply the damage he needs for his R executes, he simply cannot do anything impactful within fights. If Pyke ever reaches melee range vs Renekton he will simply get one shot, removing his overall utility and execute based role within the fights.
