Matchup Summary

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Level 1 Q or E Start - As mentioned through other notes, playing off Q and E both require different plays, however in this match up you can essentially do either of them and have pretty good success. Level 1 with Q you can also kill Rek'Sai if she is trying to be aggressive. With that said, play around the strengths of level 1 and look for a level 2 kill.

  2. 02

Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Rek'Sai you're most likely able to kill her with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Rek'Sai lose a lot more.

  3. 03

Play Around Knock Up Timer - Rek’Sai’s only real resistance against Renekton, is using her burrowed knock up to prevent Renekton from either engaging on to her to use a combo, or trying to it to help her abuse short combos in her own stacked minion wave. Rek’Sai doesn’t really ever possess the ability to beat Renekton at most stages of the game, however Rek’Sai can use this to create awkward trading patterns early if you misplay fighting her in a stacked minion wave. Once Rek’Sai has used her knock up on you, her knock up is then put on a 10 to 6 second CD before she can reapply it onto her target. Overall, if she doesn’t have her knock up she can’t really ever fend off against Renekton’s damage potential.

  4. 04

Respect Rek'Sai’s True Damage - Renekton’s true damage is another ability to help her deal damage against Renekton, which works based on her reaching her red bar of her passive, allowing her to deal bonus true damage to help her trade back against her targets. Rek’Sai’s E doesn’t really provide as big of a burst compared to Renekton’s W, so make sure that when trading you do prevent giving Rek’Sai her full E damage by stunning her into walking or dashing away.

  5. 05

Abuse Renekton's Early Game - In this match up Renekton is essentially able to do whatever he simply wants. With that said, really hone into your strong early to mid game strengths to help you dominate and win the game. Play to deny your enemy of gold and xp, play to proxy and generally lead any top side skirmishes with your insane lane advantage.

  6. 06

Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.

  7. 07

Deny Rek'Sai Tunnels - Rek’Sai’s laning phase will consist of her also using her tunnels to create escape routes when fighting against Renekton. Typically when she does her combos, she will look to right click her tunnels to escape out of Renekton’s range. Rek’Sai’s E takes 18 to 14 seconds before she can create another tunnel, so each time you walk onto them, this removes her overall value to help her escape and punishes her heavy CD before being able to do it again. Rek’Sai can also not use the same tunnel for 6 to 2 seconds based on rank, so make sure to exploit that.

  8. 08

3 Points Q > W Max - This playstyle allows you to constantly have W’s to help you stay onto Rek’sai while abusing your high damage ratios, allowing you to easily snowball and permanently shutdown Rek’Sai within all stages of the game. Make sure to put 3 points into your early wave clear and poke, then look to max W throughout the rest of your points. Once completed, max your E for additional mobility to help enable your up close stun abusing playstyle.

  9. 09

Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

  10. 10

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Rek’Sai’s overall role as a toplaner is playing to crash waves, into looking for skirmishes or teamfighting opportunities. Rek’Sai will rely on using fog of war to look for engages using her burrowed form, using it to track any incoming enemies. When the enemy steps towards her range, she will use her tunnel engage to help jump on her target, followed by looking for a clean one shot onto a squishy target. Depending on how strong Rek’Sai is, Rek’Sai will be able to fight most people within the game if she snowballs early. However if she runs it down, which is to be expected within the Renekton lane, Rek’Sai will have to think twice before going in on any targets unless she has vision of who it exactly is. Rek’Sai’s ideal scenario is playing with her team as a group to provide utility and damage towards her targets. When teamfighting, try to peel away any of your squishy carries from Rek’Sai by using your W’s, or trying to force R to help shred Rek’Sai’s HP, then look towards engaging her carries with your overall fury build up. Rek’Sai struggles to stop Renekton in most fights, due to her knock up only working once for fights. So making sure she does use it early on you is also pretty important, unless it’s used towards picking you out for her team. Overall Renekton does Rek’Sai’s job better, so make sure to play accordingly and you will win based on the strength of the Renekton pick.
