Detailed Tips

  1. 01

    Level 1 E Start - Try to cheese PTA proc or Conq with E1 > 3 auto's > disengage with E2.

  2. 02

Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Ryze you're most likely able to kill him with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Ryze lose a lot more.

  3. 03

Respect Ryze’s Ability Refresh - Ryze when using his Q can instantly refund the abilities cooldown if he uses E or W right after, allowing him to have lots of DPS and damage in the process. Earlier on in the game, this doesn’t really pose many issues, however as the game progresses this allows him to easily duel people within the side lane, while allowing him to maintain more damage within later teamfights.

  4. 04

Respect Ryze E - Ryze E allows him to spread his orb through his target, allowing him to empower his Q and W. His Q allows him to spread and increase damage across his targets, while his W transforms his slow into a root. Overall, when fighting Ryze it’s always wise not to fight him within the later stages of the game, as his E plays a giant part in allowing him to do absolutely crazy damage. Ryze’s R also scales his E Q damage through each point of his R, allowing him to scale into a monster.

  5. 05

Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.

  6. 06

Quick Trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash.

  7. 07

Rush Mercury Treads - While it isn’t totally necessary, Mercury Treads can help if you want to negate Ryze’s damage, on top of having the tenacity to easily break out of his stun faster. The additional mobility can also help stay on top of Ryze long enough to get your damage off, while removing his potential movement speed advantage through his passive and Phase Rush.

  8. 08

Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.

  9. 09

Respect Ryze’s R - Ryze R is an ability most people don’t really know how to fully use, however when it’s used right Ryze R can offer so much play making potential, through its uses to create flanking positions, gank set ups, escapes, or being able to move minion waves to push faster. As long as you can avoid being the victim in these positions, he will expend his long CD, which loses out a lot of value for his overall creativity. Try to make sure you ward or track his laners on the map, as he can use his R to flank you if you’re overextended.

  10. 10

Build Hexdrinker, Eclipse, Black Cleaver. Stridebreaker or BoTRK - Go Hexdrinker to lower Ryze’s overall damage and have a MR shield. / Build Eclipse, Stridebreaker or BoTRK Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go Stridebreaker to cripple Ryze’s mobility and provide teammates with additional utility. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build. Furthermore, you can build most things into Ryze, as he’s playstyle to build frozen heart first or AP is dependent on playstyle choice, allowing you to either counter build against it or build damage focused items to help you snowball.

  11. 11

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Ryze’s overall win condition within the game is playing to scale towards his level 16 powerspike, as each point of R he unlocks allows him to increase his Q damage, making him insanely scary the more items and XP he gets within the game. As Renekton, our main goal is to use our early to mid game advantage to help us dominate the map, while exploiting Ryze’s inactivity to farm in those points of the game. With that said, we should play with the intent of looking for any huge skirmish or teamfights, as Ryze’s overall damage and utility as a pick isn’t as threatening within those points. If Ryze does get to scale through the game and make it to his level 16 powerspike, make sure to play to catch out Ryze or his team, as well as trying to build items like Kaenic to lower his overall damage presence. When it comes to teamfights, try hard not to clump together against Ryze’s E, as he’s able to mass AoE Q damage into everyone, dealing an absolute ton of damage. Look to body block or jump on Ryze if he’s trying to push towards your team, with the intent of stunning him or apply armour shred, for your teammates to deal more damage to him. Alternatively, playing away from Ryze’s power is always recommended at later stages of the game, so try to look for creative ways of catching him out within the side lane, on top of forcing teamfights when he isn’t there.
