Matchup Summary

Draven's early game damage can be tricky for people that don't usually play against it, as Draven can easily chunk out Renekton's HP and use his E to cancel Renekton's dashes if used incorrectly. While this match up isn't overly difficult, it should be respected by taking Doran's Shield and Second Wind, with the intention of keeping the wave on your side to recieve ganks or playing around your burst heavy and fast combos. When you're level 6, Renekton can completely stat check Draven with the help of Plated Steelcaps, allowing him to easily fight and kill Draven at will. If Draven dies once in the lane, Draven cannot recover the match up as Renekton will simply steamroll him on repeat if they fight.

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Play For Sustain Early - Draven’s high damage lane bully playstyle can most certainly be a huge threat towards most champions within the early game. Typically when it comes to playing vs Draven, you simply just need to reach your level 3 and 6 power spikes to really gain control over this match up. Before these main spikes keeping your HP up is essential, hence why D Shield and Second Wind are needed in order to beat Draven.

  2. 02

Respect Draven's Q - Draven’s Q is essentially his main ability and form of damage we need to respect within this match up. Draven Q simply provides him with additional on hit damage, on top of also allowing him to stack up to 2 Q’s to help him maintain his high DPS. Something Renekton can do within this match up is that when you eventually try to fight him, stunning him can remain a giant weakness as he is able to easily lose the ability to pick up his axes. Draven losing axes can lose him a lot of total damage within fights, making it a giant weakness within his kit. Also make sure to take notice if Draven misses an axe, as that can also lead into a trading or kill window.

  3. 03

Respect Draven’s E - This is more of a reminder that Draven can use his E to cancel your E, allowing him to simply run you down and hard punish you. So when playing around Draven, try to dash fast enough when he least expects it based on your overall character positioning, or if you dash in the right range he simply won’t be able to fully cancel it, or stop you from using E2 to jump onto him.

  4. 04

Play For Manaburn - As long as you’re playing the sustain game optimally, Draven can easily run out of mana trying to be aggressive or defensive. Forcing the right trades can help you bait out his E, force him to use W’s or force him to reuse Q after losing it. Making sure you commit towards the right trades and patterns will help you nullify his lane presence in lane, forcing him to recall or kill him when he has low mana.

  5. 05

Quick Trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash.

  6. 06

Rush Plated Steelcaps - Plated Steelcaps are straight up Draven’s cryptonite, as even that thought alone can make them want to run it down or unleash their racial tirade of abuse at you. Simply rushing this will instantly give you the damage mitigation needed against Draven to help you win the match up.

  7. 07

Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.

  8. 08

Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Prior to this point in the match up, if Renekton has farmed safely and rushed defensive boots in the match up, Renekton is now ready to fight his opponent in an all in. Renekton's high base damage and stats from his R, allows Renekton to completely stat check his counter match up. Simply wait for the enemy to make a mistake, then go all out and kill your opponent.

  9. 09

Build Eclipse, Stridebreaker or Profane - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Stridebreaker to cripple Draven's mobility and provide teammates with additional utility. / Go Profane for full damage focused playstyles.

  10. 10

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - When it comes towards the mid game, Renekton will be able to match Draven with relative ease due to his overall item selection and playstyle options. Each time Draven attempts to split push, Renekton will be able to fight him at all points as long as he has his R available. Within teamfights, Draven’s role will be looking to burst your main carries with his high scaling damage. As Renekton your role is simply to just jump on him and look to one shot him, as his main weakness stems from his lack of natural peel and defensive stats. Typically locking in a ranged top laner such as Draven also puts a giant strain within the team comp, allowing you to easily build items such as Randiun’s to help you counter his crit and AD damage.
