Mordekaiser
Matchup Summary
The Mordekaiser match up entirely relies on whoever W's last, as if Renekton chooses to W first, Mordekaiser will use his W to tank the rest of Renekton's damage, leaving him in a very weak position. If Mordekaiser W's first, Renekton can use his empowered W to nuke through his shield and HP bar, allowing Renekton to easily out damage and kill Mordekaiser in the process. Mordekaiser relies on fighting his opponent in isolation, meaning if we play around teammates or minions to avoid his empowered Q damage, Mordekaiser will lose a ton of value and easily lose fights when playing around the minion wave. When Mordekaiser ults, try to kite him out as long as possible, make sure to also hold your W until he uses the shield, as this will help you beat him whenever he ults. As Renekton, we can buy Eclipse first to negate his main damage with the shield, as well as utilising W max to allow us to obtain multiple W's off within a fight, providing us a higher ceiling to snowball and overcome the Mordekaiser match up.
Detailed Tips
- 01
Level 1 Q or E Start - As mentioned through other notes, playing off Q and E both require different plays, however in this match up you can essentially do either of them and have pretty good success. Level 1 you can actually kill Mordekaiser if you play it correctly, as having Conqueror, Q and playing around your minion wave, allow you to out damage Mordekaiser even with his passive, providing you an easy kill angle if you’re playing Ignite. E start can help you chunk out Mordekaiser , while providing you the ability to pace yourself to a level 2 kill with W.
- 02
Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Mordekaiser you're most likely able to kill him with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Mordekaiser lose a lot more.
- 03
Respect Mordekaiser’s Passive - Mordekaiser’s passive can be a really strong tool, helping Mordekaiser out DPS his targets through most stages of the game. When fighting Mordekaiser, try to avoid trading against his passive if you’re even or you’re much weaker than him, as his overall damage and lower CDs will help him maintain damage through extended trades. Try to only take fights when your abilities are up, as Renekton’s high damage and counter based playstyle, will allow him to stat check and prevent Mordekaiser from getting the trades he wants.
- 04
Avoid Mordekaiser’s Q and Respect Isolation - Mordekaiser’s Q allows him to deal damage to targets in front of him, dealing even more damage if the target is isolated. When fighting Mordekasier away from minions or within his R, his overall damage skyrockets in fights, alongside him being able to abuse his low CD Q to help out DPS his targets. When laning against Mordekaiser, try to always bait out his Q by using short clicks in and out, as these will help you bait out his Q if you’re walking towards him or minions. When trying to fight Mordekaiser, try to always position yourself near the minion wave, as his Q will lose out on major damage if it isn’t isolated damage.
- 05
Abuse W Shield break Vs Mordekaiser W - A big advantage Mordekaiser has when fighting his opponents, is abusing his giant W shield to help stat check against his opponents. Mordekaiser will most often use this as soon as he stacks his passive fighting minions or champions, allowing him to activate it to prevent damage or use it to sustain after a fight. Mordekaiser’s biggest weakness however in the Renekton match up, is Renekton’s ability to break his W shield with his empowered W. Most players make the mistake of W’ing too early into Mordekaiser, but instead you should try to hold your W until he uses his shield. This is a very crucial moment when fighting Mordekasier, as typically he will hold his W very late until he’s in lethal range, providing you the perfect time to use W to help finish him off.
- 06
Avoid Mordekaiser E - Mordekaiser E allows him to drag his opponents closer to him, using it as a way of landing his Q and preventing his enemies from escaping. Just like when playing vs Mordekaiser’s Q, we need to use short clicks to bait our movements in and out of Mordekaiser’s ability range, as that will allow us to punish his lack of damage after he misses. Alternatively, if Mordekaiser is low and uses his E onto you, you can use that as a gap closer in combination with your E, to allow you to easily access on top of him and finish him off with your remaining damage.
- 07
Quick Trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash.
- 08
Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.
- 09
Respect Mordekaiser’s R - No matter how behind Mordekaiser is, his R allows him to always have a chance at being able to beat his opponent. Mordekaiser’s R heals himself for 10% of his target's maximum HP, while reducing the stats of his opponents by 10%, lowering their overall AD, Attack Speed, Armour, AP and Maximum HP. Mordekaiser’s overall stat checking power is absolutely insane with his R, so make sure to avoid playing into his damage by dodging all that you can until his duration is over. You can fight and beat Mordekaiser in R, but make sure to use your dashes and flash perfectly to avoid his Q damage, as he is guaranteed to have isolation damage when being in his R. When Mordekaiser does R, it’s recommend you also use your R right after, as fighting him without R is practically a losing battle if he’s even or ahead.

3 Points Q > W Max - W Max is highly recommended into Mordekaiser, as your ability to have multiple W’s allows you to easily get off your damage more consistently, while also avoiding the fact you have to only hold W until he uses his own. Lowering your overall W CD to 7 to 4 seconds is absolutely huge the later the game gets, as it allows you to easily penetrate through bruiser statline, while taking away his overall advantage he gets with his own low CDs. When Mordekasier also uses R, Renekton’s W max playstyle can help him continuously overwhelm and destroy Mordekaiser in the 1v1.
- 11
Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Mordekaiser’s mid to late game is entirely dependent on how good he did in the laning phase, as his natural ability to play fights is very limited without his R ability, making him quite the subpar champion when it comes to late game teamfights. Mordekaiser’s main ability is trying to hard push side lane, using his R to look for duels or catch squishy targets within skirmishes or teamfights. Mordekaiser as mentioned is very dependent on R, so whenever he doesn’t have it up it should be recommended to abuse as his natural power to defend for himself is severely weaker vs targets with scaling damage items or kits, such as W max Renekton with blade of the ruined king. When side laning vs Mordekaiser, if you’re ahead you can essentially force whatever trades on him and have the upper hand. However if Mordekaiser is ahead, try to play defensively under your tower with the intent of building Kaenic and playing for your team. If Mordekaiser ever wastes his R on you, try your best to survive against him in his R until you escape with your teammates available to help you. Usually playing to shutdown Mordekaiser is a viable strategy if you’re behind, as it can free up map presence and allow you to roam towards other places on the map at that time. When it comes to teamfights, try your best to occupy Mordekaiser away from your team, as his ability to R your high profile teammates is very crucial towards his teammates having the advantage. Mordekaiser’s naturally high damage in combination with R, allows him to easily kill any squishy targets he focuses on. Overall, making sure you can avoid that by tanking his own R or slowing him down, is essentially the gameplan you need to stick to if you’re playing to protect your carries, while removing Mordekaiser’s role within teamfights. If Mordekaiser doesn’t have R or he fails to utilise it properly, you and your team can abuse that by instantly bursting and stunlocking him out of the game.
