Rengar
Matchup Summary
Detailed Tips
- 01
Avoid Level 1 Fights - Rengar’s level 1 is pretty notorious for being able to cheese early kill leads, due to his Q and leap playstyle. Typically Rengar will try to be aggressive as soon as you come close to bushes, allowing him to play his playstyle to zone out his enemies or fight them as soon as they come into range. What we can do to counter his playstyle, is before the minions meet in the middle of the lane, we can pull the wave with our auto attack and drag it out towards the river side of the lane. Doing this will move the minion wave away from Renekton’s leap range, forcing him to stay in melee range of Renekton, preventing Rengar from effectively cheesing. You can use this strategy all laning phase to prevent Rengar’s leap playstyle, making it super effective for getting the trades and positions we want within the lane.
- 02
Play Wave Away From Bushes - This is just a separate pointer to remember through the laning phase. As we talked about, Rengar relies heavily on his passive to help him leap and do trades against his targets, giving him the only leeway to really do much within the lane. If we take his passive strengths away, by manipulating the minion wave position as we previously talked about, or we force Rengar to perma push and play on our side of the tower, Rengar will never be able to get the fights he wants against Renekton, making it an absolute nightmare of a situation for him.
- 03
Abuse Rengar Leaps - Rengar’s playstyle is pretty predictable when it comes to his trading patterns. If Rengar is hiding in a bush, he will prioritise last hits with his passive then run back into the bush to do it again. If you walk up to auto attack a minion, Rengar will hold his passive 4 stacks to jump on you with his empowered Q > E > Q > AA > W combo, allowing him to do lots of damage in quick succession, as well as building back to his 4 stacks and holding another empowered ability to use W to escape and heal your damage, or use Q or E to offensively fight back. With that being said, we should bait Rengar with short clicks by walking in and out towards the minions, which will make him leave the bush but prevent him from leaping. Sometimes Rengar will even use Q if you do this, wasting his passive and forcing him to lose stacks. If Rengar loses the empowered stack, you can essentially get a better fight, or allow him to shove the wave on your side to freeze and play safely under your tower. Eventually, at level 6, you can use this to bait Rengar to jump onto you then force an all in.
- 04
Respect Rengar W - Rengar’s W is a very important tool for top lane trades after level 1, as he’s able to use it to cheese out of your stun with his empowered W, as well as heal any damage you dealt to him within the last 1.5 seconds. This can be incredibly frustrating, but if you can play off holding your W and use your autos and Q to trade instead, Rengar’s HP will whittle down from your overall damage. Rengar W only feels effective against burst, so if you trade with the ability to hold your W damage, and only use W if he has no empowered W or he’s low, then you will be able to secure a lot more kills against him.
- 05
Rush Plated Steelcaps - Rushing boots can help you counter Rengar’s leap and movement speed based playstyle, allowing you to take off his damage from his Q’s, as well as being able to reliably stick onto him post level 6. Typically within the lane, we can’t really do much till the level 6 point, so if we hone into our ability to play off R and boots, Rengar will absolutely be useless when it comes to fighting Renekton.
- 06
Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.
- 07
Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Prior to this point in the match up, if Renekton has farmed safely and rushed defensive boots in the match up, Renekton is now ready to fight his opponent in an all in. Renekton's high base damage and stats from his R, allows Renekton to completely stat check his counter match up. Simply wait for the enemy to make a mistake, then go all out and kill your opponent.
- 08
3 Points Q > W Max - W Max Renekton can help a lot in being able to consistently stun and apply damage onto Rengar, while having the ability to get multiple W’s up before Rengar can get his own back up. Overall, I prefer W max as I’m able to have way better sticking power and burst to help me shut down Rengar easier in side lane, or even in teamfights.
- 09
Ping Rengar Roams - Rengar’s biggest strength as a top laner is his ability to roam in the enemy jungle or roam towards mid lane. Rengar can do this using his R, so make sure to ping out Rengar whenever he isn’t in the lane. If Rengar is missing in the lane, make sure to abuse your wave clear to quickly push the wave under his tower, allowing him to miss gold and xp.

Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Rengar’s overall objective, consists of using his R to make picks on isolated targets, with the intention of removing people off your team to help provide him and his team priority between objectives. As Renekton, we must try hard to always spot out or ping away our teammates from Rengar’s R engage, as any succession with Rengar R can severely hurt our chances of playing towards our advantage. Rengar always struggles playing against grouped teams, so make sure to play around your teammates as soon as a major objective is considered. Whenever Rengar tries to jump onto you or your team, either use your W instantly to lock him down within the fights, or if you know your team is going to use their CC, hold your W until he uses his own. Playing this way into Rengar’s engage removes his safety net of escape, allowing you to always counter and kill him. Within teamfights, the role of playing around Rengar remains the same, as you should always try to cover your win condition carry, to prep your stun and look to one shot Rengar as soon as he jumps in. Once, Rengar is dead you can play fights normal and use your strengths of your build to win the rest of the fight.
