Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Respect Riven Q Trades - Riven’s passive and Q damage can easily out trade her opponents early, if they get too cocky trading auto attacks with her. As Renekton, if you start Q into Riven, she will easily be able to out damage and look for a level 1 kill. Try to respect this as much as possible by letting her take wave control and playing for wave bounce, or skill W and look to be more aggressive.

  2. 02

Level 1 W Start - Renekton’s hidden tool to beating Riven’s level 1 cheese is actually skilling his W. Renekton W allows you to kill Riven on your second W trade, always presenting a free kill and a giant advantage vs ignite Riven players. Level 1, if Riven goes into to do AA > Q > AA > Q > AA > Q > AA, simply kite back with auto attacks into your minion wave, look to hit her boneplating with auto attacks, then right on the Q3 timing, use your W at the same time as her Q3 frame. Once doing this, kite back towards your tower and stop trading vs Riven. Wait until your next W, which will have enough fury to be empowered. Once W is up, walk back into Riven and use Empowered W and Ignite to kill Riven and win the fight.

  3. 03

Play For Level 2/3 Kill Angle - Once you chunk out Riven you're most likely able to kill her with your W, Dash or Flash up. Look to shove the wave around your kill timer, so you're able to make Riven lose a lot more.

  4. 04

Abuse Renekton's Early Game - Abuse Renekton's Early Game - In this match up Renekton is essentially able to do whatever he simply wants. With that said, really hone into your strong early to mid game strengths to help you dominate and win the game. Play to deny your enemy of gold and xp, play to proxy and generally lead any top side skirmishes with your insane lane advantage.

  5. 05

Quick Trades - Quick Trades - E > Q > AA > W > AA > E Out / E > Q > W > E / E Q E - These combos allow for Renekton to get quick damage off in being able to keep health up and whittling his opponent down, use these to get your laner low and look for a low HP kill with flash.

  6. 06

Avoid Riven Short Combos - Riven’s bread and butter combo is her Q > W > AA > E away combo. These combos can amount to Riven poking down her opponents, with the ability of trying to flash one shot if her target is low enough. When playing vs Riven, we can easily bait out the combo with feints, using our short clicks to move in and out to bait her reactionary combo. Once she slightly falls out of range, missing her W stun, we can abuse this with a heavy trade and look to all in Riven.

  7. 07

Abuse Renekton W Shield Break - With Riven’s high haste playstyle, she can consistently use her E to mitigate against damage and use it to disengage in any bad situations. A giant counter overall to Riven, is the fact she is unable to keep her HP up vs Renekton as he can easily nuke her shield at will, allowing for easy 1v1’s or tower dives.

  8. 08

Abuse Renekton Attack Buffering - Renekton’s advantage vs Riven is also his ability to use attack buffering through her CC, allowing him to auto attack through her W or Q3. Auto attack buffering can be hard at times, but simply need to spam click on the right frame of her CC to allow you to buffer the auto attack. It should be said that using W is a lot easier with this, as you’re able to consistently trade stuns with Riven, through her W and Q3. This trick is also what helps massively through her level 1 fight, so make sure to abuse these timing points to gain the upper hand vs Riven.

  9. 09

Play Wave On Your Side - Playing the wave on your side essentially means playing wave states on your side of the map, via abusing wave manipulation tactics or freezing on your side of the map. Simply use this to help you combo on your laner, taking away any space from them being able to trade you back (This also helps prevent the enemy running you down with their extended or sustained movement speed abilities). You can also use this wave state to run down your opponent with your abilities up, helping you obtain kills a lot easier vs stalemate or ranged match ups. Look to do this when your opponents are below 50% HP, or potentially make a mistake to provide you an all in opportunity to run them down.

  10. 10

Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.

  11. 11

3 Points Q > W Max - W Max as Renekton is a really great playstyle into Riven, as it provides the ability to consistently go toe-to-toe against Riven within all stages of the game. Renekton’s 225% AD Ratio with a 7-4 second CD is simply way too much for Riven to handle. Opting into this playstyle presents the ability to consistently split push and 1v1 Riven, alongside the ability to have constant stuns with W in any teamfights. Overall if you’re against Riven, always put 3 points into Q then W max to easily nullify her pick.

  12. 12

Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

  13. 13

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Depending on how well you played into Riven, you essentially should leave Riven completely useless within the game, forcing her to afk side lane trying to farm back within the game. Once we assert our overall lane dominance we should look to either continue to dominating side lane if our team is winning, or look to roam the map and look to secure any objectives or turret kills with our team. Typically you can stay inside the lane if your team is doing fine, allowing you to keep perma killing Riven or forcing multiple people top lane with your pressure. If your team is losing however, try to look towards using your lead on the map by substituting your mid laner or adc to go top, with their objective to wave clear and scale into the game. When it comes to team fights, Riven’s only play making opportunities come from either using flash R combos, with the intention of nuking any carries, or looking for flank plays with her red trinket, trying to cut off your team from escaping within those moments. As Renekton, we should look to peel against the Riven with our W focused playstyle as this can easily shut down Riven, alongside allowing your team to easily finish her off. As long as you can prevent Riven from comboing and playing her way, by instantly tracking her movements and preventing her from getting close, Riven will not be able to do anything and will most likely end up losing the fights for her team.
