Shen
Matchup Summary
Detailed Tips
- 01
Avoid Shen Q Trades - Shen’s Level 1 can be pretty spooky as he’s able to abuse his Q trades to overpower Renekton, allowing Shen to zone Renekton from the wave. Level 1, if Shen drags his Q over to your side of the map, simply avoid standing in line with Shen and his sword, as he will get additional attack speed and slow his target. Try to walk in and out of him and the minions to bait his Q, then look to trade with Q after his passive and Q goes on CD. Overall you can play to let him push ,then wait for wave bounce to start asserting better trades.
- 02
Abuse Empowered Q / E Trades - Shen’s overall weak points against Renekton, is Shen’s lack of waveclear in comparison to Renekton’s. Renekton can cheat tempo plays by using his Q and E wave clear to easily shove waves, while also allowing himself to proxy and play for his powerspikes. Typically Renekton out performs Shen in the 1v1 at level 6, so playing for level 6 or playing exclusively for empowered Q and later E trades, will help you cut down Shen’s HP and resistances to allow for 1v1’s.
- 03
Avoid W'ing Shen W - Shen’s W allows him to block all auto attacks including Renekton’s W, allowing him to peel damage off himself or his carries. When trading vs Shen, we can usually bait his W by walking into him, which he will automatically W when you begin to auto attack, or you can E in and force his W out, followed by using E2 to disengage. Shen’s W is 16 seconds, so after he uses it we can abuse it with more heavy trades with our W.
- 04
Avoid Shen E - Shen E is a great ability towards his gank setup or for forcing his trades, his trades consist of E > Q Auto Attacks, while using his W to block any incoming damage. Try to use short in and out clicks to bait Shen to E towards you, once he misses abuse him with your auto attacks and abilities back accordingly. When playing around Shen’s side of the map, be aware he will use his E to also force ganks or use it when you’re near his tower. Try to also use your E to avoid his E if you’re unable to side step it.
- 05
Play Waves Accordingly - Simply assess whether or not you want to play for freeze, to help you deny XP and CS, while presenting yourself more opportunities to create fights. Or, play to shove waves to create proxy angles, tempo resets or create a dive opportunity. Renekton has all the cards to do whatever he wants with wave management. Also respect that if your laner tries to proxy, simply proxy back or coordinate a kill on them with your jungler.
- 06
Abuse Renekton's R Spike - Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.
- 07
Ping And Punish Shen R - Shen R is a pretty disgusting ability when it comes to countering skirmishes or teamfights, meaning when playing vs Shen we need to make sure we play accordingly around it. When laning vs Shen you can either cancel his R with your W, or you can let him TP across the map. If you can trust your team and look at the overall situation bot with confidence in letting him TP, you can let him R bot then look to abuse your wave clear and look for plates.Sometimes, if a fight looks too close where his impact can decide the fate of a bot lane fight, you could play to cancel his R with your W. W’ing Shen R isn’t always worth even if he does get something from it, as he can funnel plates and force Shen to either TP back or miss gold and XP. If you don’t want Shen to R, you can also play to consistently crash the waves into his turret, which prevents him from R’ing without missing XP and gold. When it comes to skirmishes and playing around your team, typically on picks Shen will try to use R to protect his teammates, with that said we can hold our empowered W to nuke the overall shield they will get. Against Shen, typically you want to bait out fights to force his R, or jump on your target with the intention of killing them before Shen arrives.

3 Points Q > W Max - Q or W max is completely fine, however if you want to play vs Shen and play to kill him in side lane then I would recommend W max. W max allows you to break his passive shield consistently, while allowing you to have the self peel and damage to beat him in extended trades.
- 09
Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Shen’s scaling through the game is very up and down, depending on how good his team is overall. Within an even game, Shen can offer the necessary utility needed to win fights and change the overall game. As mentioned, the main way we can play into Shen, is either abusing our side laning power to force tower pushes and scale towards our powerspikes, or we can play to look for picks utilising our W shield break and overall damage to kill targets before Shen can R. Overall, mid to late game is very hard and you just have to trust your judgement, as fights can easily be hard countered by Shen’s R and W. If there’s ever a chance to bait out Shen’s R then take the opportunity, Shen with no R is absolutely free to do whatever you want in the game. In actual fights, try to peel and protect your main carries, use your empowered W’s and E to shred Shen’s resistances and peel him away from your carries. If Shen does R early in the fight, you can look to one shot his carries after his R to ensure you kill his main source of damage and win the fights.
