Matchup Summary

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Level 1 Q Start - Try to push for level 2 advantage while poking Tahm Kench with your Q, on level 2 skill E/W use advantage to chunk out Tahm Kench. Try to actively avoid taking Tahm’s Q, by playing off the edge of your Q and minions

  2. 02

Abuse Renekton's Waveclear - Renekton’s biggest strength vs Tahm Kench is using his Q and E wave clear towards his advantage. Renekton’s wave clear remains a big problem for Tahm Kench, as Renekton is able to easily proxy, force recall timers or build waves, into resetting on Tahm Kench. Tahm’s lack of wave clear makes it super hard for him to contest pushes, as well matching Renekton’s item leads he gets from returning to lane. Make sure to use your advantage to always get the upper hand on Tahm Kench, allowing you to force him into lane longer and preventing him from resetting without losing gold or xp.

  3. 03

Respect Tahm Passive - Tahm Kench’s passive is a core element to avoid within the match up, as he’s able to stun his target with his Q or eat them up using his R. When playing vs Tahm, try to always avoid tanking more than 1 or 2 hits, while making sure to walk back and kite him towards your minion wave. Doing this will allow you to have minions trade against his damage, on top of avoiding his potential benefits while being on his side of the map.

  4. 04

Respect And Avoid Tahm's Q - Tahm’s Q is where most of his power resides, as he’s able to deal considerable magic damage towards his target as well as being able to heal based on his missing HP. When fighting Tahm, you typically want to try and abuse him after he uses his Q, as he’s unable to sustain or synergise his Q with his 3 passive stacks. Make sure to utilise minions to block his Q, or move side to side to avoid getting hit by his Q.

  5. 05

Abuse Empowered Q / E - Within this match up, using empowered Q and E are both very important for dealing with Tahm Kench. Using your empowered Q will help you out sustain, poke or shove minion waves at uncontestable power, while Renekton’s E helps later on in the game to help shred Tahm’s Armour, while synergising with your BoTRK, Black Cleaver or Eclipse items. Make sure to use both within the game to help you poke or shred against Tahm’s resistances.

  6. 06

Respect Tahm's Gank Setup - Tahm Kench has pretty great gank setup with his kit, as he’s able to land his Q then look to use his W as a knock up. Try to always ward or track where the jungler is, as this provides a lot of impact towards Tahm Kench in being able to kill Renekton. Make sure to also use your E to avoid Tahm Kench’s W, while also using your movement to side step any Q’s he tries to throw.

  7. 07

Respect Tahm Kench’s R - Tahm’s R allows him to eat and reposition his opponent away from his side of the map, allowing his R to be a great tool in denying his opponents to run away or allowing him to finish off kills. Make sure to always avoid being eaten by his R if you don’t have R, as his power to stat check is increased through his access to having R.

  8. 08

Abuse Renekton's R Powerspike - Once you reach level 6 your ultimate will essentially help you consistently stat check and dominate any match ups you were winning or losing. Make sure to always wait for your R CD to help you make plays, otherwise it will lead you towards a major disadvantage in dueling your enemies.

  9. 09

Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver or BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

  10. 10

Mid Game + Teamfighting Tips - Tahm Kench’s overall role within the mid to late game is to either push side lanes with his heart steel build and early advantage, or play around his team with the playstyle of protecting his main carries. Renekton’s role against Tahm Kench should involve building items such as BoTRK or Eclipse to help him health shred his higher HP builds, as well as allowing Renekton to fight him within the side lane. In the event Tahm Kench gets an early advantage, Renekton will need his team to help him shut him down within fights, as this provides Renekton the ability to successfully shut him down. If Renekton gets ahead early, Tahm Kench cannot match Renekton’s heavy snowballing and versatile gameplay. Within teamfights, Tahm Kench will try to either hard focus Renekton’s squishy carries, or he will play to protect his main carry with R. Our job is to either protect our carries from his engages, using our W and Empowered E shred to help apply the utility needed to shut him down. Or, we can try to look to jump on his carries, however try to let Tahm Kench make the move on your team before you commit to doing this. Overall, this match up entirely depends on Tahm Kench’s overall positioning, which if he plays aggressive we can exploit this by killing his carries before he’s able to use R on them.
