Matchup Summary

Volibear can be a easy match up, depending on if you can play patient and play accordingly to how he plays. Firstly, you can bully Volibear off the wave level 1, by using Q and avoiding his E to help shove the wave and bully him off the minion wave (With Conqueror and Ignite, you're guaranteed to win. Post level 3 you're able to win abusing short trades and playing away from his abilities, for example always avoiding his E circle or using Empowered W on his shield will help win the trading exchanges and all in's, playing to avoid his W2 is always very important to cut his overall sustain in lane or fights. Getting items like Black Cleaver, BoTRK, Eclipse or Antiheal, are all good sources to put him even further behind and be able to win consistently vs him. W Max is also great in the match up to help you win long fights, as well providing your team more lock down against him later in the game.

Detailed Tips

  1. 01

Level 1 Q Start - Try to push for level 2 advantage while poking Volibear with your Q, Renekton can also abuse his Level 1 strengths to bully Volibear off the wave.

  2. 02

Don't Be Scared - Renekton is seriously way stronger than people realise in this match up, simply bully him with AA's and Q level 1. Even if he gets passive playing D Shield + Second Wind will hard counter it,the only thing to really worry about is getting hit by his E.

  3. 03

Play Around His E - His E is the only thing you need to worry about, getting his shield is very vital for him to force his trades and abuse his high E damage. Try to bait it out, then wait out his W, or if you have fury use empowered W to shield break and hard force a brutal trade. Do this whenever Voli is low and trying to shield himself in lethal range.

  4. 04

Respect His W - Another aspect to respect is Volibear's W. His first W you don't really need to worry about, however his 2nd W will do additional damage and heal him based off his missing HP. Try to always kite volibear's W timer off in long fights, don't play into his game of letting him dictate the fights with his hit and run playstyle.

  5. 05

Play Waves Accordingly - Simply assess whether or not you want to play for freeze, to help you deny XP and CS, while presenting yourself more opportunities to create fights. Or, play to shove waves to create proxy angles, tempo resets or create a dive opportunity. Renekton has all the cards to do whatever he wants with wave management. Also respect that if your laner tries to proxy, simply proxy back or coordinate a kill on them with your jungler.

  6. 06

3 Points Q > W Max - Renekton in this matchup can consistently abuse W Max at will in this lane with its 7-4 Second CD. Which specifically helps self peel Volibear off from being able to heal with W, trying to use E to shield and trying to stun Renekton with Q. As long as you’re utilising your spacing and W correctly, Volibear will always be struggling to do anything towards you.

  7. 07

Abuse Renekton's R - In Pure 1v1 Renekton R's is a giant stat boost that will help you win early or later game fights vs Voliebear, the mixed damage and fury generation will provide multiple empowered W's to help you consistently beat volibear.

  8. 08

Build Eclipse, Black Cleaver and BoTRK - Go Eclipse for consistent power through mid game and damage mitigation with the shield. / Go Black Cleaver for additional CDR and other versatile stats for utility based gameplay. / Go BoTRK to one shot and snowball with a damage focused build.

  9. 09

Midgame + Teamfighting Tips - At later stages of the game Volibear's damage and overall play potential will solely depend on what kind of build he is playing. AP builds will force him to split push and target side lanes the majority of the game. Full tank playstyles with a potential Flickerblade will force him to play a more skirmish and teamfight heavy playstyle. Depending on these situations, if he is going split push build, simply get your teammates to gang up on Volibear if he's too strong at points in the game and simply just remove him off the map, once doing that you can focus on upcoming objectives or simply force heavy teamfights with Volibear dead. If Voli is going tank or flickerblade build, simply peel him off your team with your lower CD W's and attempt to play around your R to help melt him in the fights.
